French Broad River Academy is a split-gender, independent middle school (grades 6-8) in Asheville, North Carolina, that offers a competitive academic program in tandem with outdoor education and leadership opportunities.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, French Broad River Academy sought to bring new life to the Maria Noakes Outdoor Center on the girls’ campus through a mural. They envisioned a piece that would reflect themes of community, connection, and the ever-present flow of the river—central to both the school's mission and the region’s identity.
This project became a powerful step in the healing process, serving as a reminder of nature’s strength, its ability to both give and take, and the respect it commands. The mural now stands as a tribute to resilience, the power of the river, and the deep bonds that sustain us.
As part of the project, I had the opportunity to visit the school and share with the students about my work, creative process, and the inspiration and meaning behind the mural.
This was such a fantastic project from start to finish. Thank you FBRA!
