The River, Resilience, and the Ties That Bind: A Mural for FBRA

In the heart of Asheville, North Carolina, the French Broad River Academy is more than just a middle school—it’s a place where students learn to navigate both academics and the natural world. They offer a competitive academic program in tandem with outdoor education and leadership opportunities that instill in its students a deep respect for the environment, community, and resilience.

After Hurricane Helene, French Broad River Academy sought to bring new life to the Maria Noakes Outdoor Center on the girls’ campus. They envisioned a mural that would reflect themes of community, connection, and the ever-present flow of the river—central to both the school's mission and the region’s identity.

Bringing the Vision to Life

From the start, this project felt deeply personal. As someone who has experienced firsthand the power of nature—both its destruction and its beauty—I connected immediately with the school’s vision. The French Broad River, which has shaped this region for generations, became the central symbol in my design. Flowing through the mural, it represents both constant change and unwavering presence, a force that both challenges and sustains.

Beyond the river itself, the imagery in the piece speaks to resilience, renewal, and the strength in our communities. Nature has a way of demanding respect, but it also provides moments of profound beauty and unity. Just as the students at French Broad River Academy learn to navigate whitewater rapids, overcome obstacles, and work together, this mural stands as a reminder of their collective strength—and the power of moving forward.

A Shared Experience

One of the most rewarding parts of this project was engaging directly with the students. I had the opportunity to visit the school, share my artistic process, and talk about the inspiration behind the mural. Seeing their curiosity and enthusiasm reinforced just how important art can be in shaping a space and telling a story.

This mural isn’t just about reflection—it’s about the lessons the river teaches us. It’s about honoring change, embracing challenges, and flowing forward with courage.

A Tribute to the River and Its People

Now, as the mural stands at the Maria Noakes Outdoor Center, it serves as both a visual and symbolic reminder: we are part of something bigger, something constantly moving, something deeply connected. The river, the school, the community—all intertwined in a cycle of growth, learning, healing, and adapting.

I’m incredibly grateful to French Broad River Academy for trusting me with this project and for allowing me to contribute to their space in such a meaningful way.
